ABOUT ME
Currently Lecturer in the Department of Global Studies and Human Geography at Middle Tennessee State University, I am an urban cultural geographer studying black geographies and place-making, particularly within urban contexts. I am particularly interested in the socio-spatial power of affirmative resistance practices, resistance that centers affirmation of marginalize communities and their ways of life. My previous research with the FAMU Marching 100 looked at how Homecoming temporarily re-produces the city of Tallahassee for FAMU alumni, students, and fans and shows how FAMU operates as a place of respite for Marching 100 members, providing affirmation of black (geographic) visions, experiences, and practices.

I earned my B.S. in History with honors from Troy University, my M.A. in History of Race, Ethnicity, and Society from Columbus State University, and my PhD in Geography from Florida State University. I am an active member of the American Association of Geographers, currently serving as Vice-Chair of the American South Specialty Group and previously serving as Vice-Chair (2017-2018) and Chair (2018-2019) of the Graduate Students Affinity Group (GSAG) and Student Representative (2017-2018) of the American South Specialty Group.

When not conducting research, writing, or teaching students, I enjoy hanging out with my two cats (Emma and Sophie) and traveling with my partner (Mytrice Allen). I am an avid baseball fan on a quest to visit all MLB stadiums and enjoy playing disc golf. I also used to play and run a LARP (Live Action Role Play) game out of Tennessee and North Georgia. A nerd at heart, I also have an obsession with Magic the Gathering (MtG).

Finally, I am an advocate for social justice. I routinely seek out opportunities to participate in social justice campaigns (often, but not always, on campus). I have recently gotten involved in the Engaging Men Committee at MTSU and have previously supported educational and criminal justice campaigns in Florida.
